Isuzu Motors South Africa has introduced the highly anticipated and desirable, all-new D-Max bakkie. The new D-Max has been refined with increased levels of refinement, quality, technology and efficiency.

The 24-strong line-up of single cab, extended cab and double cab models is available with two engine options, five specification levels, manual and automatic transmissions and in 4x2 or 4x4 guise.

The New D-Max is the seventh generation of Isuzu bakkie to be produced in Ggeberha over the past 42 years and is a result of a R1.2 billion investment in Isuzu’s local operations. Production is for the domestic market as well as 25 left and right-hand drive markets across the African continent.

Isuzu’s LCV offerings have always been keen players in the local market, delivering exceptional reliability and durability, whether used in hard-working commercial applications or the popular double-cab leisure market.

Design and styling

With an emphasis on its rugged, yet modern and refined look, the D-Max is bolder and sportier than ever. It is clearly evident by the fresh and more aggressive front fascia and grille. Slimmer more angular lights incorporate Bi-LED projector headlamps and LED daytime running lights. This new face is complimented by LED edge lighting for turn indicators, tail lamps and the integrated LED high-mount brake lights.

A new load box design has released additional loading space and capacity, with up to 15mm added to the bed floor length and an extra 30mm in depth for the box sides. At 1530mm wide, the tailgate offers easy loading of wide objects for added convenience and versatility.

Luxurious interior

The high series models of the D-Max range offer a smart and sophisticated cabin with an upper-class quality feel. Sharp graphics and a variety of layered and textured surfaces that incorporate soft-touch materials provide a tactile and quality feel throughout. A new dashboard design features an elegant, simplified layout that positions the controls and switches within easy reach.

Interior space has been increased, especially in the rear, while the driving position can now be further optimised thanks to an increased range of seat adjustment and the fitment of a smaller diameter steering wheel.

The instrument binnacle features a large 4.2-inch LCD multi information display alongside analogue dials for the rev counter and speedometer.

The centre stack houses a seven or nine-inch display, depending on the model. The touchscreen system includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto for smartphone mirroring.

Technology and safety

All new Isuzu D-Max models feature an impressive array of safety equipment including ABS brakes, EBD and Brake Assist. In addition Electronic Stability Control with traction control, Hill Start Assist, Hill Descent Control and Trailer Sway control keep things in check in tricky driving situations.

The range topping V-Cross raises the benchmark even further with an Intelligent Driver Assist System that incorporates a comprehensive suite of active and passive safety features.

In the event of a collision, the D-Max is fitted with up to eight airbags, depending on the specification level.

Under the bonnet

The new D-Max is available with a choice of two diesel engines that are set to continue Isuzu’s long-standing reputation of durability, reliability and efficiency.

The new Isuzu 1.9-litre Ddi power plant is standard fitment on all single cab models and is also available on extended and double cab derivatives. Utilising a common rail direct engine it produces a maximum power output of 110kW at 3600rpm and 350Nm from 1800rpm, while boasting superb fuel economy and low running costs.

Fitted to mid and high-series extended cab and double cab models, the upgraded 3.0 Ddi engine has been optimised for more torque at lower engine speeds, superior pull off and acceleration as well as reduced noise levels and optimised consumption. In its latest configuration the 3.0-litre power plant boasts 140kW at 3600rpm and 450Nm from as low as 1600rpm.

These engines can be paired with either a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission. Underlining its suitability for both work and paly, the D-Max is available in both 4x2 and 4x4 guise across single cab, extended cab and double cab body styles.

Model range

Ensuring that there is a D-Max model to cater for virtually every need and application is the fact that there are five specification levels, ranging from entry-level Standard to upmarket V-Cross.

All models are sold with a five-year/90 000km service plan, with service intervals scheduled for every 15 000km.
