All-new Jeep Grand Cherokee arrives in SA

The all-new Jeep Grand Cherokee, which continues to blend off-road capability with a premium on-road driving experience and now offers a third row of seating, has gone on sale in South Africa.

The latest iteration of this iconic nameplate has been designed and engineered to offer an unmatched combination of 4x4 capability, on-road refinement, premium styling and craftsmanship as well as a variety of advanced safety and technology features.

A big focus of the engineering and design process focussed on optimising comfort and handling, while reducing weight, improving fuel economy and delivering improved 4x4 capability along with premium on-road dynamics.

Heritage inspired design

The exterior design of the Grand Cherokee has been largely inspired by Jeep’s first full size SUV, the original Wagoneer. As such the Grand Cherokee features a long hood and cab as well as a forward tilted grille. A lowered, tapered, roof improves aerodynamic performance without sacrificing cargo spaciousness and utility. A full suite of LED lighting is standard on all models and allowed for design flexibility that helped shape the identity of the vehicle, with the ultra thin front and rear lights allowing the vehicle to be instantly recognisable both during the day and at night.

Inside story

Interior designers set out to create an exquisite and technically advanced passenger cabin and features handcrafted materials and modern amenities that pair seamlessly with its lean and tailored exterior. The centre stack has been realigned to be even more accessible to the driver while a bright, structural element frames the 10,1-inch Uconnect 5 system display. A 10.25-inch frameless digital cluster, features nearly two dozen menus from which the driver can view information on systems such as driver-assist technologies, adaptive cruise control and highway assist amongst others. 

Uconnect 5 now offers operating speeds that are five times faster compared to the previous generation and by using an Android system with over the air updates it is able to continuously evolve to offer new content, features and services. The cabin is fitted with a total of 12 USB Type A and Type C ports across all three rows.

Overland and Summit reserve models are fitted with a McIntosh audio sound system, that features a 17-channel amplifier with a maximum output of 950 watts and 19 speakers, including a 10-inch subwoofer.

Designed to offer maximum passenger comfort, the Grand Cherokee features excellent third-row capacity and increased cargo volume. Second row doors that open 64 degrees allow for easier ingress and egress of the second and third row. Cargo volume measures a massive 1 328 litres, which can be expanded to 2 396 litres with both rows of rear seats folded down.

The new Jeep Grand Cherokee is available with more than 110 safety and security features including innovative applications of technologies that refine the connection between the driver, the vehicle and the road.

Innovative off-road ability

Off-road capability is taken care of by three 4x4 systems, namely Quadra-Trac 1, Quadra-Trac II and Quadra-Drive II with rear electronic limited slip-differential. All three systems feature an active transfer case that improves traction by moving torque to the wheel with the most grip. In addition the Grand Cherokee L’s Selec-Terrain traction management system lets customers choose their preferred on and off-road setting for optimum 4x4 performance from five available terrain modes.

The Grand Cherokee L is now also available with Quadra-Lift Air Suspension that features electronic adaptive damping. This system offers 277mm of ground clearance, while being able to adjust ride height based on road conditions and speed to reduce drag and increase fuel economy.

Under the bonnet

The Grand Cherokee has been equipped with an all-aluminium 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 engine that offers 210kW and 344Nm. The 60-degree angle between its cylinder banks ensures inherently smooth running, augmented by accessories that bolt directly to the engine block.

Model range and pricing

All models are sold with a five-year/120 000km warranty and a five-year/100 00km maintenance plan.
