BMW has refreshed the X3 with a new look, improved equipment and a range that has been optimised in line with customer needs.

A more modern appearance includes design changes to the front and rear and an emphasis on classic X elements. The BMW kidney grille and headlights have been redesigned, as has the front apron and rear bumper. A black bar in which the iCam is positioned, if fitted, ensures visual separation of the grille.

The front headlights feature adaptive LED headlights with Matrix function, while the adverse weather light replaces the fog lights. New graphics have been applied to the rear lights. BMW Laser Light is available as an optional extra.

High quality X elements such as underbody protection and X Line specific side skirts are now standard. The sporty genes are underlined by the M sports package of the BMW X3 M40i

M Sports package

The M sports package includes a specific front apron that features significantly larger air inlets and inserts finished in high-gloss black, as well as more pronounced air curtains. Window graphics, roof rails and BMW kidney frame and bars are optionally available in high-gloss black. The sportier rear bumper includes a more striking diffuser. 19-inch Y-spoke alloys in a midnight grey bicolour fill the arches. Additional 20 and 21-inch wheels are available as an option as are blue or red brake calipers.

M Performance cars such as the BMW X3 M40i, shows its affiliation to the BMW M portfolio with a specific BMW M kidney that bears typical M double grille bars in high-gloss black with an M logo.

Inside story

The BMW X3 is now fitted with the same centre console as that of the BMW 4 Series. The freestanding, central Control Display with touch function offers a 10.25-inch screen as standard in all vehicles. A 12.3-inch version of the touch display is also available as an option. Significantly improved standard equipment now includes sport seats with covers from Sensatec generation as well as three-zone climate control.

The centre console accommodates the newly designed control island incorporating the gear selector, electric parking brake, hill descent control, driving experience functions as well as the BMW Controller lever and buttons for the stop/start system.

BMW Live Cockpit professional offers a fully digital display behind the steering wheel and also offers optimised, wireless smartphone integration via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Deep integration of Amazon Alexa makes it possible to use Amazon’s voice service inside the vehicle, just like you do in your home.

Under the bonnet

The BMW X3 will be available with five engine options in South Africa. These include three diesel engines, with 110kW in the sDrive18d, the 140kW xDrive20d and the 195kW xDrive30d.

The petrol-powered sDrive20i boasts 135kW and the M40i a whopping 285kW. All engines are paired with an eight-speed steptronic gearbox.

Driving Assistant Professional now available

The Driving Assistant Professional, available for the first time on the X3, offers comfortable relief and increased safety in situations where there is a conscious need for assistance. In addition to the optional Driving Assistant, functions include Active Cruise Control, emergency lane assist and improved steering/lane guidance assistant.

The 3D environment visualisation Assisted View in the instrument cluster provides an overview of which Driving Assistant Professional assistance systems are activated. Parking Assistance Plus now includes reverse assistant while the optional BMW Drive Recorder, takes videos around the vehicle.

Model range and pricing

A new range structure ensures greater focus on sportiness and X-ness as well as enhanced clarity. The M sports package and familiar M variants are available as an alternative to the standard equipment enriched with high quality X elements.

In order to make the vehicle configuration process simpler and more straightforward for customers, the complexity of the equipment lines and optional extras has been reduced by 30 percent.
