Ford has announced a limited edition, high-performance Mustang Mach 1, which is said to be the best-handling Mustang ever offered.

Improved performance

Performance has been boosted to a level worthy of the iconic Mach 1 moniker with enhanced aerodynamics, a special calibrated 5.0 litre V8 and improved cooling for improved track capability.

Fords all-aluminium V8 petrol engine offers 340kW at 7 500rpm and 529Nm at 4 600rpm thanks to an open-air induction system and 87mm throttle bodies.

The Mach 1 is also the first production Mustang to be offered with a high-performance TREMEC six-speed transmission for seamless downshifts. Alternatively customers can specify Ford’s 10-speed automatic transmission, featuring an upgraded oil-cooler and recalibrated software for optimised performance, perfect for spirited road and track driving exploits.

The unique suspension setup includes specially calibrated MagneRide dampers and bespoke springs, anti-roll bars and bushing specifications that deliver improved control and response under high cornering loads. The result is the fastest track lapping Mustang to date.

Iconic design

Design elements pay homage to the Mach 1 Mustangs of the 1960s and 70s, with bold bonnet and side stripes, performance-derived body styling and unique 19-inch alloy wheels. Aerodynamic touches such as a front splitter and rear diffuser result in 22 percent more down force compared to the Mustang GT. The limited edition model is available in a unique set of eight body colour, strip and contrast-line combinations.

Unique interior touches

The interior is distinguished by an ebony colour scheme and dark engine turned aluminium detailing, while leather sports seats feature metal grey stitching. Each model features a unique dashboard badge featuring the Mach 1 logo and build number, complemented by unique sill plates and a new start-up display on the 12-inch digital instrument display cluster.

Standard comfort and convenience technologies include heated and cooled front seats, Ford’s sophisticated SYNC 3 connectivity system and a premium 12-speaker B&O Sound System.

When will it be available?

As the Mustang Mach 1 goes on sale in Europe, its South African introduction is yet to be confirmed.
