Ford Mustang Mach 1 on its way to SA
Only 90 units of the special edition Mustang Mach 1 are destined for South Africa
The local Mustang range will soon be bolstered by a limited edition model in the form of the Mach 1 Fastback coupé. This top of the range 5.0-litre V8 model will be limited to 90 units for the South African market.
Following the remarkable success of the Mustang Bullitt, Ford South Africa realised that South Africans have an appetite for special edition models.
As with the 1969 original, the Mach 1 bridges the gap between the standard Mustang GT and Shelby models with a V8 under the bonnet, functional aerodynamic upgrades, competition capable suspension and a cockpit that is focussed on the driver.
Engine performance is the same as that of the Mustang Bullitt, boasting 338kW and 529Nm and there is a choice between a six-speed manual or a 10-speed automatic gearbox. Both transmissions have been suitably upgraded to handle the extra power with cooling and calibration updates. A rear axle cooling system keeps temperatures in check too.
Visual upgrades include a bold Mach 1 grille and the use of low-gloss Magnetic dark grey and black accents throughout. At the rear an upgraded spoiler produces 22 percent more downforce than the one fitted to the Mustang GT while the lower diffuser is the same as the one found on the Shelby GT500.
19-inch five-spoke aluminium wheels are a modern incarnation of the Mach 1 Magnum 500 style wheels and are fitted with low profile performance tyres.
Further upgrades the ride and handling include the fitment of the latest MagneRide adaptive suspension, newly calibrated power steering, stiffer sway bars and front springs, rear sub frame with stiffer bushes, rear toe link from the Shelby models and an upgraded brake booster. The available drive modes now include a Track mode along with Track Apps and a launch control function.
All 90 Mach 1 models heading to SA will be fitted with the Appearance Package as standard and will be painted Fighter Jet Grey along with a satin black bonnet and side stripes with orange accents and orange brake callipers. The front fenders feature Mach 1 badging.
Inside the Mach 1 features orange seatback accents, new door sill plates, and an engraved badge on the dashboard that displays the unique chassis number, reinforcing the special edition status. A dark spindrift instrument panel is flanked by a 12.3-inch LCD instrument cluster.
