Hyundai Kona

A thoroughly refreshed Hyundai Kona, featuring a variety of upgrades, dynamic new styling and models featuring sporty N Line trim is now available.

A fresh new design offers a dynamic new appearance while an enhanced powertrain line-up provides both sporty and eco-friendly options. An extensive range of convenience features will ensure a satisfying ownership experience. An improved safety suite offers improved active and passive safety features.

The new Kona will be available in South Africa in three variants with two specification and trim levels. The Kona 2.0 Nu Executive with an Intelligent Variable Transmission, the Kona 1.6 T-GDi Executive with a seven-speed dual clutch transmission and the flagship Kona 1.6 T-GDi N Line, also equipped with a dual clutch gearbox.

What’s new?

A striking new front end design features a sporty look and eye-catching, protective cladding panels. The stretched bonnet culminates over a wide central grille that gives the Kona distinctive powerful face. LED daytime running lights provide a narrow, piercing look.

Lower down, the main bumper connects smoothly to the wheel arch claddings, in a contrasting material to the main body. A robust skid plate provides protection when things get dirty while vertically orientated aerodynamic inlets improve airflow.

The side profile remains largely unchanged but a wedge-shaped silhouette is further accentuated by a visual connection between the shoulder creases and cleaner front end.

At the rear, new taillights feature horizontally stretched graphics that reflect the unique identity of the front-end light signature. A new rear bumper now includes contrasting materials.

The updated models feature a new 17-inch wheel design for the 2.0 Executive and different 18-inch wheels for the 1.6 T-GDi Executive and 1.6 T-GDi N Line respectively.

The new Kona comes with six exterior colours, which can now all be combined with a phantom black two-tone roof on the 1.6 T-GDi Executive and N Line derivatives adding to the personalisation and self-expression options.

Inside story

The interior of the refreshed Kona has been redesigned with a more sophisticated and progressive appearance. A new console is disconnected from the instrument panel, placing emphasis on the horizontal layout.

New ambient lighting illuminates the cup holder and foot wells, aluminium finishes on components such as the speakers and air vents add to the refinement.

The rear cargo area has been increased in size and second row legroom has also been improved, along with USB ports for rear passengers.

The seats fitted to Executive variants have been improved and now also feature height adjustability. The regular models are fitted with artificial leather seat trim, while the 1.6 T-GDi N Line features full leather seats with red N Line piping and stitching.

Higher levels of standard specification

All Kona models now feature wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay capability which allows for mirroring of smartphone functionality onto the 8-inch display. A wireless charging pad ensures a cabin free of cables.

All Kona derivatives are equipped with ESP and Vehicle Stability management, EBD, Downhill Brake control and Hill Start assist control.

Static safety features include airbags for the driver and passenger, as well as side and curtain airbags. The Kona is equipped with five three-point safety belts with pretensioners as well as Isofix attachments for child seats.

Under the bonnet

Doing duty in the 1.6 T-GDi Executive and 1.6 T-GDi N-Line is the top of the range Smartstream 1.6 T-GDi paired with a seven-speed dual clutch transmission that boasts 148kW and 265Nm of torque.

A Smartstream 2.0 Atkinson naturally aspirated petrol engine, delivering 110kW and 179Nm, does duty in the Kona 2.0 Executive, where it is linked to an Intelligent Variable Transmission.

The suspension of the new Kona has been retuned to improve driving comfort and several parts of the vehicle have been refreshed to lower Noise, Vibration and Harshness levels and increase comfort within the cabin. The steering too has been refined, now offering a more comfortable yet connected feel.

N Line

The N Line model stands apart from the regular model range thanks to sporty styling, particularly at the front of the Kona, where it seamlessly links with the body coloured wheel arch claddings. Instead of a skid plate the N Line features an aerodynamic lip with low-flying corner fins. Larger air intakes are distinguished by a unique mesh covering. On the side body coloured wheel cladding and a specific diamond-cut 18-inch wheels set the N Line apart while the rear too features a unique bumper as well as exposed exhaust tail pipes.

The Kona N Line has been equipped with a range of Hyundai’s SmartSense safety and driving assist features including Smart Cruise Control, Blind Spot Collision-avoidance assist, Lane Keep Assist and Lane Following Assist, Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-avoidance assist, Forward Collision-avoidance assist, Safe Exit Assist and Fatigue Detection.

Pricing and availability

The updated Kona is now available at Hyundai dealerships countrywide. Pricing includes a seven-year/200 000km manufacturers warranty and a five-year/75 000 km service plan.
