Grand i10

Hyundai’s bestseller, the Grand i10 has been thoroughly refreshed with style, flair, added space and a comprehensive list of features that belies its compact size.

The Grand i10 had a tough task as a successor of the hugely successful Getz in South Africa, but it has more than lived up to the challenge, Now in its third generation, 49 252 units have been sold in South Africa to date.

The Grand i10 has become Hyundai’s bestseller where it enjoys a considerable market share, and especially in the current economic times it has a very important role to play, as Hyundai executives believe that there is still growth to be seen in this segment, which has plenty of competitors.

The new Hyundai Grand i10 with its solid body, good looks, spacious interior and extensive specification gives the experience of a bigger car despite its compact dimensions.

The local range is made up of five variants, which include the Motion and Fluid trim levels and two engine and two gearbox options.

Styling improvements

New LED daytime running lamps and fog lamps (in Fluid versions) combine with the stylish bold grille to give the new Grand i10 a bold road presence and the impression of a lower stance. All bumpers and door handles are body coloured, but the Motion derivatives have a black front grille and black trim for the side rear view mirrors. The front grille of the Fluid versions is treated with a neat chrome finish and the addition of daytime LED running lights in the side corners.

The Grand i10 Motion models are differentiated from their Fluid siblings by their 14-inch steel wheels with wheel covers, while the Fluid derivatives are equipped with alloy wheels.

Grand i10 buyers can choose from five body colours; Polar White, Phantom Black, Typhoon Silver, Titan Grey and Fiery Red. The Fluid version offers additional two-tone options, the Polar White and Fiery red body colours with a black roof.

The Grand i10 comes with a long list of features for a car of such a small stature. The Fluid specification includes heated side rear-view mirrors, a multi-function steering wheel, artificial leather seat covers with red stitching and rear park assistance.

Interior improvements

Interior comfort is substantially improved with completely redesigned front and rear seats that now offer extra bolstering.

Practicality comes standard, the rear seats backrest can fold forward, as a full bench for the Motion derivatives and a 60:40 split for the Fluid versions. In all derivatives the occupants are kept cool thanks to a manual air conditioning system, with air vents for the rear passengers too.

All models are fitted with a 6.2-inch infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality.

Under the bonnet

A 998cc three-cylinder engine and a 1 197cc four-cylinder engine are used to drive the new Grand i10. The 1.0 litre engine used in both the Motion and Fluid derivatives, offers 49kW at 5 500rpm and 94Nm at 3 500rpm, while its 1.2 litre sibling, which powers Fluid derivatives offers 61kW at 6 000rpm and 114Nm at 4 000rpm.

Even at high altitude of Gauteng the 1.0 litre engine delivers ample power although it does need to be motivated with the five speed manual gearbox when trying to overtake. There is a choice of a five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic gearbox that drives the front wheels for both engine derivatives.

The 1.0 litre engine mated to manual gearbox uses only 5.4 litres per 100km, while the same engine coupled to the automatic derivative uses 5.9 litres per 100km on the combined cycle.

The 1.2 litre Grand i10 Fluid with the manual five-speed transmission consumes 5.9 litres per 100km and 6.9 litres per 100km when mated to the four-speed automatic gearbox.

Safety first

All new Grand i10 versions are fitted with driver and front passenger airbags, Isofix child seat attachments and pretensioners for the front seat belts. ABS and EBD is standard fitment on all models.

Value for money

All derivatives are sold with an inclusive seven-year/200 000 km manufacturers’ warranty, as well as a 1-year/15 000 km service plan and 5-years/150 000 km roadside assistance.
