The all-new Hyundai i20 has arrived in South Africa and sporting a new engine, roomier cabin and drastically refreshed exterior styling.

The third generation i20 has been launched in Motion and Fluid specification levels and remains one of Hyundai’s most important models as it adds style to its well-known quality, reliability and practicality characteristics.

Despite the on-going trend to introduce SUVs in all shapes and sizes Hyundai believe that there is still a place for a small hatchback in the market place and the sales success of the i20 is proof of this.

The i20 features Hyundai’s new Sensuous Sportiness design philosophy and provides the i20 with a stylish character that is emphasised by dynamic looking front and rear bumpers and a new radiator grille. From the side energetic proportions and a wedge style are amplified through a bold character line and unique C-pillar design. The redesigned lighting signature connects seamlessly with the rear, emphasising the i20’s width and stance.

Exterior looks are further augmented by fresh 16-inch alloy wheels on the Fluid derivatives, while the 15-inch steel wheels are finished off with attractive silver covers.

Inside story

The interior offers an airy feeling, while appearing sculptured and appealing. Dynamic proportions improve roominess and visibility while also offering increased width as well as seating space for rear passengers, thanks to a longer wheelbase.

The refined steering wheel is equipped with easy to use toggle switches and the colour accents are matched to the rest of the interior. In low light blue ambient lighting adds a premium touch to the cabin.

The i20’s dynamic proportions offer increased width and an enlarged wheelbase compared to the previous generation. This provides increased seating space for passengers in the car, with rear passengers able to enjoy 88mm more legroom and 40mm more shoulder room than in the previous generation. Boot space has been increased too.

Interior trim choices range from mono-tone cloth for the Motion and 1.2 Fluid derivatives to dual-tone cloth seats for the 1.2 Fluid two-tone. Also available is monotone artificial leather for the 1.0 Fluid and dual-tone artificial leather for the 1.0 Fluid two-tone derivative.

All models offer increased connectivity and a range of high-tech convenience features including wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, allowing simple mirroring of your smartphone. A wireless charging pad in the centre console ensures your phone remains charged and connected, without the need for any cables.

The list of convenience features includes among others a rear view monitor, USB charging socket with cell phone storage in the rear and multi function steering wheel. In addition, the Fluid derivatives feature electric folding mirrors, air vents for rear passengers and cruise control.

Under the bonnet

Along with the new i20 is the launch of a new engine for the range. A 1,0-litre, turbocharged, three-cylinder petrol engine that is well proven in other Hyundai models offers 90kW and 172Nm. It is paired to a seven-speed DCT transmission or a six-speed manual transmission. Fuel consumption is claimed to be 6,5 litres per 100km for the manual version and 6,9 litres per 100km when equipped with the DCT gearbox.

The 1.2-litre Kappa, four-cylinder, engine is available in both derivatives and boasts 61kW and 115Nm. This engine is available with a five-speed manual gearbox only and is said to use just 5,9 litres per 100km.

The 1.4-litre MPi engine delivers 74kW and 133Nm and is paired with a six-speed automatic transmission which will return a fuel consumption figure of 6,9 litres/100km.

Safety first

A reinforced body structure, made of 36% advanced high-strength steel is home to passive safety systems including six airbags in the Fluid derivatives and two airbags in the Motion derivatives. ABS and EBD as well as Isofix child seat anchors are standard across the range.
