There is a new contender in the highly competitive SUV and crossover segment in the form of the Hyundai Palisade.

The Palisade, which measures more than five metres in length take up its spot at the helm of the Hyundai range, which comprises the Santa Fe, Tucson, Creta, Venue as well as recently upgraded Kona crossover.

The Palisade offers exceptional space, technology and safety for a large SUV with seating for up to eight and a massive cargo space.

Design fitting of a flagship

The exterior design reflects the Palisades unique flagship identity with a premium, distinctive and bold road presence.

Up front is a dominant, bold and wide cascading grille. Separate composite headlamps and a vertically connected forward lighting signature which includes LED headlights, LED daytime running lights and LED turn signal mirrors create a strong visual demeanour. Full volume over-fenders and body sides offer muscular detailing. The rear emphasises a wide and stable stance thanks to graceful detailing and a vertical LED rear tail lamp design. Large 20-inch alloy wheels fill the wheel arches and add to the Palisades presence.

Inside story

The interior of the Palisade has been designed to create a sense of relaxation and comfort, with seating for seven or eight passengers making it perfect for family adventures.

An 8-inch infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wireless cell phone charging, multiple simultaneous Bluetooth connections, seven USB ports, ventilated front and second row seats in the seven-seater derivative, heated front and second-row seats in both derivatives, shift by wire and roof mounted diffuser vents cater for comfort and connectivity needs.

The One-Touch second row seat allows for one touch operation of the seat for ingress of third row occupants. Second row captain’s chairs are also available in the seven-seater derivative.

Each seating row offers USB outlets bringing the total to seven, while a wide-angle conversation mirror allows the driver to clearly see passengers in the rear.

The audio and navigation display is an 8-inch touchscreen, coupled to a seven-inch TFT LCF instrument cluster for the driver.

The industry first, roof vent diffuser design provides a focused, partially diffused or fully diffused stream of air to the rear passengers with quieter airflow, draft free operation and more uniform air distribution.

A premium sound system is well suited to the Palisade’s upscale interior and offers a Rear Seat Quiet Mode that allows the driver and front passenger to listen to audio without it being transmitted to the speakers in the second and third row, so that sleeping passengers are not disturbed.

A panoramic rear glass along with a cutaway roof creates a sense of spaciousness for rear passengers.

Under the bonnet

A R2.2 CRDi engine paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission can be found under the wide bonnet. This highly efficient four-cylinder boasts 142kW at 3800rpm and 440Nm from 1750rpm. Hyundai claim that the Palisade will use just 7,5 litres per 100km.

The eight-speed automatic transmission with a multi-plate torque converter offers HTRAC four-wheel drive configurations. Gears can also be selected manually via the paddle shifts behind the steering wheel.

The HTRAC AWD system was developed as a multi-terrain mode system and therefore provides an electronic, variable torque split clutch with active torque control between the front and rear axles. Driver selectable HTRAC Smart, Eco, Comfort and Sport modes allow tailoring of power delivery to suit the conditions.

The Terrain selector alters the HTRAC AWD system via Sand, Mud and Snow modes, optimising front and rear torque distribution, left and right wheel slip control, engine torque as well as shift patterns. The Palisade’s AWD HTRAC system incorporates an AWD locking-differential for especially challenging traction situations.

Cutting edge safety technology

While carrying passengers in comfort is important, keeping those passengers safe is a priority. Advanced safety technologies include Blind Spot Detection, Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, Safe Exit Assist and Rear Occupant Alert.

Rear Occupant Alert monitors the rear seats and prevents children or pets from being forgotten in the car, but also helps in case children accidentally lock themselves in the car by alerting the driver via a honking horn and flashing lights.

The Safe Exit Assist system uses radar to detect cars approaching from the rear and cautions passengers that are about to exit the vehicle via an acoustic warning.

The Palisade is equipped with a total of six airbags and utilises a full-length large side curtain airbag that includes third-row seating coverage for enhanced rear occupant protection. Tyre pressure monitoring with individual position display, two Isofix anchors in the second row and one in the third row round off the complement of safety features.

Pricing and availability

The Palisade is available in two derivatives with different seating options and pricing includes a seven-year/200 000km warranty and a seven-year/105 000km service plan.
