Hyundai Staria is a people mover from the future

The futuristic Hyundai Staria is set to take over the reigns from the H1 people mover

Hyundai Staria

Hyundai’s futuristic Staria has arrived in South Africa where it will take over the reigns from the popular and successful H1.

The Staria embodies Hyundai’s transformation as a Smart Mobility Provider and embraces the inside-out design philosophy that emphasises interior spaciousness and usability.

Over time the complete Staria range will be available in 2 to 11 seat configurations but has been initially launched in South Africa in three variants, the Luxury, Elite and Executive with various seating configurations, features and trim levels. A Staria panel van and a versatile five-seater version, similar to the previous H1 Multicab, will be added to the local offering during 2022.

Futuristic design

Said to be inspired by the curve of light that illuminates the Earth’s horizon at sunrise when viewed from space, the sleek exterior is defined by a single stroke running from front to rear.

The front end features horizontal daytime running lights and a positioning lamp that runs across the entire width of the vehicle. A wide radiator grill with unique pattern and low-set headlamps are designed in such a way that they continue the clean silhouette. The same body colour for all the parts upfront maximises the vehicle’s premium and modern look.

A tinted brass chrome treatment, applied to the Hyundai emblem, headlamp bezels, front and rear bumpers, wheels, side mirrors and door handles further accentuate the premium and modern look and feel.

At the rear a wide window framed by elongated vertical tail lamps incorporate Hyundai’s unique Parametric Pixel lamp design and garnish on top. A lowered rear bumper allows for easier loading and unloading of luggage.

Inside story

Inside, low beltlines and panoramic side windows ensure excellent visibility and add to the feeling of spaciousness.

The interior features a simple and modest layout, including an 8-inch front display screen, touch-based centre fascia and a button type electronic shift lever for the Luxury and Elite versions. A digital instrument cluster is on top of the dashboard, providing and unobstructed view for driver.

Both driver and passengers also have access to a centre console equipped with cup holders, USB ports and additional storage space in the Luxury derivative. The Elite and Executive versions feature a third middle seat in front, of which the backrest can tilt forward to provide cup holders and storage space for odds and ends.

The Luxury derivative offers a variety of additional interior features that will transform the mobility experience for passengers. The seven-seater premium model is equipped with Premium Relaxation seats in the second row that recline electronically and have sliding capabilities for easy reach or to maximise cargo space. The one touch relaxation mode allows the seats to recline automatically to a seat posture that comfortably disperses the passengers weight and improves overall body balance.

In the nine-seater Luxury model, the individual seats in the second row can swivel 180 degrees to face passengers in the third row, making the Staria ideal as a corporate vehicle or mobile office. The Staria’s generous legroom is among the best in the segment and can be converted into an expansive additional cargo space when all the seats are pushed together thanks to the long sliding seat function.

The Staria’s innovative interior space utilisation is made possible thanks to the MPVs 3 273mm wheelbase, 5253mm overall length and width of 1997mm.

The interior is available in black, also for the artificial leather seats, in the Executive and Elite versions and comes with genuine Nappa leather seats in brown, grey or black in the Luxury derivative.

Under the bonnet

The Staria is fitted with an improved version of the R2.2-litre VGT turbo diesel engine, with 130kW and 430Nm on tap. Improved compressor and turbine wheel performance ensure better low to mid range torque, while the eight-speed automatic transmission does an excellent job of keeping it on the boil.

Smart features for safety and convenience

High levels of passive and active safety come standard thanks to six airbags and three-point seatbelts and headrests on all the seats. Top of the range derivatives are fitted with features such as Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Forward Collision Avoidance Assist and Blind-Spot Collision Avoidance Assist. Furthermore, Elite and Luxury versions are equipped with Safe Exit Assist and Rear Occupant Alert.

A very innovative blind spot view monitor in the Luxury derivative shows an image in the 10,2-inch Supervision cluster when the indicator is switched on momentarily in the place of the rev counter for a right turn or speedometer for a left turn.
