Isuzu has added a value-oriented version of its mu-X seven-seater SUV in the form of the 1.9 LS 4x2 AT to the range. This new budget friendly derivative, along with the addition of a 4x4 version of the 3.0 LSE expands the local line-up to a total of six models.

According to Isuzu the entry level 1.9-litre significantly broadens the appeal of the mu-X as it is perfect for customers who are drawn to the outstanding space, comfort and versatility that the mu-X offers but who require greater affordability and lower running costs. The competitive pricing makes it an attractive proposition for customers looking to step up from a sedan, hatchback or bakkie.

Under the bonnet

Under the bonnet is Isuzu’s 1 899cc four-cylinder intercooled turbodiesel engine, as used in the D-Max bakkie range. This engine is renowned for its gutsy performance, outstanding fuel economy and trusted durability that are possible thanks to a high-pressure common rail direct injection system and high-efficiency variable geometry turbocharger.

The 1.9 Ddi engine offers 110kW at 3 600rpm and 350Nm available from 1 800rpm and is paired to a six-speed automatic transmission, which provides a seamless driving experience. A rear differential lock is fitted as standard to aid traction on slippery surfaces.

Updated design

The new 1.9 LS mu-X features the latest styling updates as applied to the rest of the range for 2023. This includes privacy glass for the rear windows, the new Norwegian Blue colour option, classy dark Magnetite finishes for the radiator grille, front and rear bumpers, front fog lamp bezels, roof rails and side steps.

Modern LED lighting is standard fitment across the range and includes daytime running lights, Bi-LED headlamps, fog lamps and combination taillights.

Stylish 18-inch alloy wheels are fitted and accompanied by a full-size alloy spare wheel for added peace of mind.

Inside story

The spacious cabin has received updates in terms of dark Magnetite accents that enhance the sophisticated look and feel. Standard leather trim adds a further touch of luxury while the driver’s seat boasts eight-way power adjustment and the front passenger seat four-way adjustment.

A seven-inch touchscreen system with integrated Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Wi-Fi and front and rear USB charging ports provides seamless smartphone connectivity and charging options while on the move. Front and rear parking sensors along with a rear-view camera make parking manoeuvres a cinch.

Driver convenience and safety

Even though the 1.9 LS is the most affordable model in the mu-X range, there has been no compromise on safety or convenience.

Standard safety features include Electronic Stability Control with Traction Control, ABS brakes with Electronic Brake Force Distribution and Brake Assist System, Brake Override Accelerator, Hill Start Assist, Hill Descent Control, Trailer Sway Control and Cruise Control.

In the event of an accident, the occupants are protected by driver and front passenger airbags, front seat side airbags, curtain airbags and a driver’s knee airbag.

Model range and pricing

The Isuzu mu-X is sold with a five-year/90 000km service plan, five-year/120 000km warranty and roadside assistance.
