New Civic Type R is the fastest Honda yet
All-new Honda Civic goes on sale in South Africa
Under the bonnet
Under the vented bonnet of the all-new Type R is a powerful version of Honda’s award winning K20C1 engine of which output, torque and response have all been improved by a redesigned turbocharger, increased air intake flow rate and a new, more efficient exhaust system. The result is that the turbocharged 2.0-litre, four-cylinder engine now produces 235kW at 6 500rpm and 420Nm from 2600rpm.
This engine is paired to an improved six-speed manual transmission that offers the driver an intimate and rewarding connection. In addition, a lighter flywheel and a revised rev match system ensure perfectly paired rev matching when shifting down through the gears, helping to maintain stability on corner entry. The gearbox also features a high-rigidity lever and optimised shift gate pattern. A standard helical-type limited-slip differential helps put power down to the ground efficiently.
A larger grille opening, bigger radiator and new large-diameter fan improve engine cooling, ensuring sustained, optimal performance during extreme driving.
Improved handling
Honda has prioritised handling by developing a more rigid body structure, while the wheelbase and front and rear track have been extended. A retuned dual-axis front strut and multilink rear suspension setup help to improve straight line stability and steering feel.
Customisation of the driving experience is possible thanks to four pre-configured settings namely Comfort, Sport, +R and a new Individual mode that alters the characteristics of the engine, steering, suspension and engine sound.
Design
Advanced aerodynamics give the Civic Type-R a sleeker, more sophisticated muscular look and the body is more aerodynamically efficient in order to generate more downforce for improved high-speed stability. The body is longer, lower and wider with broad fenders flared over the wide track that house lightweight 19-inch alloy wheels wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tyres. The special reverse rim design has been engineered to improve the stability of the tyre contact patch under load.
The front bumper design is more aggressive while the lower stance is accentuated by wider rear doors and a reshaped rear bumper and diffuser.
Inside story
The cabin of the new Type-R enhances the exhilaration of driving with performance focused details and features that set it apart from the crowd, including red seats, carpet and trim, a redesigned aluminium shift knob and a Type R plate on the dash.
The driver and front passenger sit lower in new, lightweight, heavily bolstered seats with suede upholstery, offering exceptional support and comfort. Good visibility is ensured using thinner pillars, relocated side mirrors and a lower bonnet.
A new 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster features clean, easy to read graphics and an extensive selection of displays. A second new meter design exclusive to the Type R’s +R mode allows the driver to obtain necessary information instantly, with the engine rpm and gear position placed at the top. A motorsport inspired illuminated rev indicator located above the gauge cluster gives a quick indication of engine rpm during performance driving.
In the centre console is a nine-inch colour touchscreen that includes Android Auto and wireless Apple CarPlay functionality. Qi compatible wireless charging and a Bose Centrepoint premium sound system handle the entertainment. A new and enhanced version of the Honda LogR Performance Data allows the driver to use the on-board system to gain access to key features such as lap times, a tyre friction circle in 3D motion that displays the maximum tyre force and innovative scoring that helps drivers improve their skills on track.
First class safety
The new Honda Civic Type-R incorporates an extensive suite of active and passive safety technologies including Honda’s ACE body structure and Honda Sensing Active safety technology that offers a broad range of driver assistance features and driver aids as standard including Collision Mitigation Braking, Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Keeping Assist, Road Departure Mitigation and Auto High-Beam. These are in addition to expected features such as a full complement of airbags, Vehicle Stability Assist, Hill Start Assist, ABS, EBD, Auto Brake Hold, Agile Handle Assist and Driver Attention Monitor.
