In April this year Volkswagen unveiled the evolutionary upgrade of the sixth generation Polo and that announcement has now been followed by the showcasing of the refined Polo GTI.

The GTI tops the Polo range in terms of power, technology and sportiness. The iconic design of the visually updated compact athlete is characterised by legendary GTI touches such as a red strip in the radiator grille, honeycombe grille and premium sport seats with Clark pattern.

What’s new?

The new Polo GTI will be equipped as standard with the new IQ.LIGHT LED matrix headlights and an illuminated radiator grille crossbar which compliment the daytime running lights.

Newly designed LED tail light clusters extend towards the middle of the boot lid and feature and animated brake light and integrated dynamic turn signal. New GTI-specific bumpers give a confident, wide presence.

Updated running gear

Fitting for a GTI, the new Polo GTI is equipped as standard with specially tuned running gear. This lowers the vehicle by 15mm. During fast cornering, the XDS electronic differential lock improves traction. As part of the Electronic Stability Control and traction control systems, XDS controls the brake pressure of the inside front wheel, ensuring it retains traction.

Available as an option is Sport Select, which allows the driver to choose from two different damping characteristics. Driving profile selection is standard fare, with four modes to choose from.

Under the bonnet

Driving the front wheels of the Polo GTI is a two-litre, turbocharged, direct injection, petrol engine producing 152kW and 320Nm. Gearbox duties are taken care of by a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox which contributes to the rapid 0-100km/h sprint time of 6.5 seconds.

Inside story

A number of latest generation assistance systems guarantee the safety and comfort for all passengers including the latest version of the online infotainment systems. The Polo GTI will be fitted as standard with the Digital Cockpit Pro with features a 10.25-inch display as well as the Ready2Discover Infotainment system that includes wireless App-Connect displayed to an eight-inch touchscreen. More advanced media systems with bigger displays are available on the options list.

Black, Red, Grey dominate the interior and chrome finishes. Red decorative stitching can be found on the leather multifunction steering wheel, gear lever and seat edges. The centre panels of the seat are covered in the legendary Clark check pattern while the trim on the dash panel is finished in an eye-catching Kings Red Glossy. Matt-chrome details can be found on the steering wheel clip, selector lever, instrument surround, vents and pedals.

Latest generation driver assistance technology

The updated Polo GTI comes with a number of driver assistance and safety systems as standard equipment. Bundled under the IQ.DRIVE umbrella is Volkswagens assisted driving systems. The Travel Assist system permits partly automated driving in the Polo for the first time and can take over braking, steering and acceleration using functions of the Adaptive Cruise Control and Lane Assist systems.

Front Assist continuously monitors vehicles ahead of the Polo and assists the driver by preconditioning the brake system alerting the driver with visual and audible warnings or by a jolt of the brake pedal.

Based on the new Life specification the Polo GTI features pioneering technology including a centre airbag, which is located in the side of the backrest on the driver side. In the event of a crash it will deploy to protect the driver and front passenger from colliding with each other. In addition to the regular driver and passenger airbags, the Polo GTI is also equipped with front and rear curtain airbags.

When will it be available?

The new Polo GTI will be built at Volkswagen’s Kariega plant outside Port Elizabeth ahead of its launch in the first quarter of 2022. Local pricing and specification details will be announced closer to that date.
