Base models: Though standard derivatives are described as no-frills variants, they include attributes such as auto-locking doors, electrically-powered windows, air-conditioning, steering-wheel-mounted switchgear, follow-me-home headlamps and four integrated loudspeakers for the radio/CD audio unit.

Prestige models: These models are upgraded to a touchscreen, DVD audio system with six speakers, a rear camera, cruise control and a leather-wrapped steering wheel, while the top of the range. 

Exclusive models:  Include added features such as automatic air-conditioning, push-button ignition with keyless entry, a TFT-colour instrument cluster, rain-sensing wipers and LED headlamps.



Base models: Trim combinations include black-and-blue fabric-covered seats in standard grade models – which retain fixed seat backs on the rear bench –

Prestige models: Comprise fabric and leather in a choice of colours, blue-and-black, or grey with red accents.

Exclusive Models: Features a black leather interior with contrasting silver accents and a 60/40 split rear seat back that can be folded to increase boot capacity.

Since many components in the cabin share commonality with other locally produced vehicles in Toyota’s range – including the Hilux bakkie and Fortuner SUV – the Quest’s interior imparts a feel that is likely to be familiar to anyone who has previously driven one of those derivatives, with even the car’s roof lining taken from a shared parts bin.

Switchgear is readily accessible, the trio of dials ahead of the driver clear and easy to read, while the infotainment screen placed in the centre of the dashboard offers as much convenience for the front seat passenger as it does for the pilot, with Bluetooth as well as USB connectivity incorporated in its design.      


Power and capability

Across the range, power is provided by a 1,8-litre engine that produces 103kW and 173Nm, Crompton pointing out that the unit’s torque figure is not only higher but also produced lower down in the rev range compared with the 1,6-litre mill it replaces, resulting in a more responsive driving experience – one of the key attributes customers deemed necessary for the new model, according to Toyota’s research.


Coupled to a six-speed manual gearbox, the engine is said to consume 7,0 litres/100km in the combined cycle, the figure dropping to 6,3 litres/100km if the unit is mated with automatic, Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) – that figure bettering the one achieved by the outgoing plant.


As before, the suspension comprises MacPherson struts at the front and, at the rear, a torsion beam design that facilitates a large, flat-floored boot. Disc brakes are provided at all wheels. Standard-grade models ride on 15-inch steel wheels, while mid- and high-grade derivatives are shod with 16-inch alloys. All models feature a full-sized spare wheel.


The Drive 

On the road the Quest feels stable, comfortable and competent, the cabin well-insulated against noise, vibration and harshness. There’s an almost luxurious quality imparted by the top-specification model as it rides along, its CVT gearbox – which simulates seven-speed transmission – displaying characteristics not usually associated with auto ’boxes of this type: smooth changes with almost no rev overrun coupled with responses that are quick and clean.
