The all-new Renault Kiger has arrived in SA and is destined to shake up the local compact SUV market thanks to a modern design as well as a high level of standard specification.

Renault has positioned the Kiger in such a way that it will be more alluring than a five –door hatch, yet more competitive than a conventional B-SUV thanks to its features and competitive pricing.

The eye-catching exterior design alludes to sportiness. Upfront the grille features a 3D graphic finish with honeycomb shaped chrome effects. Flanking the grille are LED daytime running lights while striking tri-octa LED Pure Vision headlamps give an impression of modernity and sophistication.

At the rear, LED taillights with glossy black inserts, outline the Kiger’s rear double C-shaped lighting signature.

Strong muscular lines are complimented by high ground clearance, aluminium skid plates and an integrated rear spoiler. Functional roof rails allow for the fitment of a wide variety of accessories.

Inside story

The intuitive interior is equipped with features normally reserved for more expensive segments such as an 8-inch touchscreen, wireless smartphone replication, reverse camera, hands free smart access, ambient lighting, multi-sense driving mod and a 3D surround sound ARKAMYS sound system.

The floating 8-inch touchscreen features wireless smartphone replication for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto allowing occupants to seamlessly connect their smartphones and access the special driving and multimedia apps.

The interior is generously roomy and ultra-modern and features a multitude of clever storage compartments throughout which total 29 litres and compliment the 405 litre boot space, which expands to 979 litres when the rear seats are folded down.

Higher spec models are fitted with multi-sense that enables the selection of different driving modes, Normal, Eco and Sport, which alter the power steering, gear ratios and throttle response accordingly.

Under the bonnet

The Kiger is available with two engine variants. A normally aspirated 1.0 litre offers 52kW and 96Nm. This engine can be paired with either a five-speed manual gearbox or an Easy-R five-speed AMT gearbox.

A more powerful turbocharged 1.0 litre, three-cylinder boasts 74kW and 160Nm, while returning impressive fuel economy of just 5.0 litres/100km.This engine can be mated to either a five-speed manual gearbox or an X-Tronic CVT which provides smooth and responsive gear changes resulting in enhanced driving comfort.

Both engines do a great job of powering the lightweight Kiger across a multitude of driving conditions, from zipping around inner city streets to cruising along highways.

Safety first

The Kiger’s body structure features reinforcing that allows it to meet three-start global NCAP conditions and is fitted with ABS and EBD, four airbags on the top of the range Intens model, Isofix, rear parking sensors and ESP on models equipped with the turbocharged engine.
