Toyota Corolla Cross wins overall SA Car of the Year title

The South African Guild of Motoring Journalists Car of the Year (COTY) competition, which, was introduced in 1986, has announced its winners for 2022. The competition scores vehicles that were launched in South Africa in the last year.

After a four week scoring process the Toyota Corolla Cross was voted the overall SA Car of the Year winner. The Mercedes-Benz C-Class won the prestigious juror’s excellence award. This category only considers raw scoring of jurors without automated scoring factors.

This is the third time in the history of the competition that the Corolla nameplate has clinched the COTY accolade, the first front-wheel drive Corolla launched in 1984 won the inaugural COTY award in 1986. In 1989, Corolla once again walked away with the honours when the GLi TwinCam Executive was crowned the winner.

The Corolla Cross represents the first combination of the Corolla characteristics combined with an SUV body shape that offers enhanced functionality and utility. The Corolla Cross is available in both petrol and hybrid variants and is built locally at the Prospecton Plant in Durban.

Toyota walked away with four category victories too, with the Urban Cruiser winning in the compact category, the Corolla Cross in the compact family category, the Corolla Cross Hybrid in the new-energy category and the Toyota Land Cruiser 300 in the Adventure SUV category.

The Volkswagen Golf GTI walked away with the honours in the performance category while the Mercedes-Benz C-Class took the laurels in the midsize category. The Nissan Navara took the honours in the double-cab 4x4 category.

The Car of the Year scoring process comprises scores submitted by jurors as well as automated scoring factors such as sales, performance, segment share and value for money, the data for which is provided by Lightstone Auto.
