Specification and pricing of VW Golf 8 GTI announced
Volkswagen announces pricing and specification of Golf 8 GTI ahead of 1 September on-sale date
Ahead of its official launch on 1 September, Volkswagen South Africa has announced final details of the Golf 8 GTI.
The GTI is set to spearhead the Golf range as Volkswagen South Africa has taken the decision to only import performance models of the Golf, including the GTI and Golf R. Buyers looking for a normal Golf will have to settle from one of Volkswagens SUV models instead.
The Golf 8 is an evolution of the tried and tested Golf recipe. The grille has been reduced in size but still houses the iconic red strip. Wider headlights and that red line now extend into the fenders, for a wider, lower look. Day light running lights take the form of five hexagonal elements in the lower honeycomb finish. Sleek LED taillights dominate the rear while widely spaced twin exhaust pipes continue the wide stance theme. Wheel options include 18-inch Richmond or 19-inch Adelaide alloys.
A modern interior includes premium, one-piece sport seats that are finished in a combination of black and grey leather, complete with red touches.
In the centre console a significantly smaller gear selector is flanked by a start button, parking brake and wireless charging tray. With the majority of functions controlled via the touch screen, the amount of buttons throughout has been reduced. Those that are present are the soft touch haptic kind.
The driver is greeted by a Digital Cockpit Pro instrument cluster while the centre console houses a 25.4cm touch screen. The characteristic three-spoke steering wheel is now wrapped in leather and includes touch controls that allow the driver to control a large variety of functions without lifting a hand.
Under the bonnet
Powering the Golf 8 GTI is a similar EA888 two-litre, four-cylinder, turbocharged, power plant as before, now producing 180kW and 370Nm.

Buyers will be able to customise their GTI with equipment from the long list of optional features including; panoramic sunroof, mechanically swivelling trailer hitch, IQ Light: LED Matrix Headlights, Black Styling Package with black 18-inch Bergamo alloy wheels, Head-up Display, Adaptive chassis control including driving profile selection, smokers package, 19-inch Adelaide alloy wheels, Harmon Kardon sound system, Discover Pro Radio, Park Assist, Rear Assist with rear view camera, Blind spot monitor, Travel Assist and Adaptive cruise control with Front Assist and Autonomous Emergency Braking.
The new Golf GTI will be available in three solid paint exterior colours (Pure White, Urano Grey, and Moonstone Grey), four metallic colours (Dolphin Grey, Atlantic Blue, Kings Red and Reflex Silver) and two pearlescent colours (Deep Black Pearl and Oryx White Pearl).
