The Toyota Corolla XR sedan ticks all the boxes for golfers
The best mid-sized sedan for golfers
When shopping for a new car golfers have a specific list of requirements that need to be in place to ensure that their car ticks all the boxes required by their hobby and the lifestyle that goes along with that.
Naturally the vehicle needs to be able to carry all their golf kit, while delivering all round comfort and driving enjoyment and being able to park in front of the clubhouse in style. Buying options might seem endless but when shopping with a strict budget, the Corolla XR is a perfect fit for the job at hand.
Modern and stylish in design
The new Corolla features a highly expressive design, featuring a similar front end to that of the Corolla hatch. This includes a prominent lower apron, sculpted headlights and a flowing three-box design. The front bumper employs a large trapezoidal lower grille, with black-moulded border and large mesh pattern. The arrow-shaped headlights, with integrated DRL elements, flow towards the centrally mounted Toyota emblem, which is surrounded by a slim line upper grille element.
A short roofline and sloping C-pillar convey a sense of motion, while a short rear overhang adds to the dynamic presence. Compact LED taillights feature a bi-colour design, sharp outer edging and a dark border. XR models are fitted with ultra stylish turbine-shaped alloy wheels.
Upmarket interior feel
The interior features an elegantly simple design, reduced upper panel height, soft-touch finishes and brushed metal accent strips. Blue contrast stitching adds an air of sportiness and harmonises with blue illumination for the switchgear and instrument panel. The front seats feature a revised design and are covered in a synthesized fabric called Rezatec, which offers the comfort of fabric along with the premium feel of leather.
Array of luxury, safety and convenience features
The Corolla delivers on both the tech and convenience fronts, with the inclusion of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto controlled from a touchscreen interface. Climate control with Eco mode, a reverse camera, power seat adjustment, one-touch functionality for electric windows, keyless entry as well as tilt and telescopic steering adjustment form part of the standard offering of the XR derivative.
Under the bonnet
Two engine options are available for the Corolla sedan. A tried and tested 1.8-litre mill offers 103kW and 171Nm and is paired with a seven-speed CVT transmission.
The flagship XR model is only offered with the new 2.0-litre engine that boasts an impressive 125kW and 200Nm and is available alongside either a six-speed manual or a ten-speed Shiftmatic CVT. Toyota claim an impressive combined cycle fuel consumption figure of just 6.0 litres per 100km.
