The Corolla name comes with a lot of heritage as it has carved out a reputation over 12 generations and 50 million units sold globally, making it one of the most successful model ranges ever.

The Corolla Cross represents sees this historical name plate venture into the crossover/SUV segment as it combines the respected characteristics that the Corolla is known for, with a body shape that offers enhanced function and utility.

The Corolla Cross will be built in South Africa at Toyota’s Prospecton plant and thus continues the legacy of local Corolla production.

The Corolla Cross is based on Toyota’s TNGA platform, a modular platform capable of underpinning hatch, sedan and SUV model ranges such as the C-HR, Prius, RAV4 and 12th generation Corolla models.

Advantages of this platform include excellent ride quality, low NVH levels a spacious cabin and class leading luggage capacity, a low centre of gravity, McPherson strut front suspension design and torsion beam rear suspension for enhanced packaging and excellent ride comfort.

Modern exterior design

The Corolla Cross combines the striking design language of the Corolla Sedan and Hatch models with an SUV shape. Upfront it features large, elongated headlamps, a prominent trapezoidal radiator grille, broad upswept lower bumper and fender flares that create a sense of width. At the rear, large elliptical tail lamps with trapezoidal detailing compliment the rear crease lines.

Inside story

The interior is similar to that found in the Corolla hatch and sedan siblings. An elegant design with excellent ergonomics ensures a pleasant space for occupants. Soft-touch materials and double-stitched accent detail create a premium feel. The dashboard is home to a large, centrally-mounted, infotainment system. Practically speaking the Corolla Cross boasts outstanding visibility and large door openings. A 60/40-split folding rear seat compliments class leading luggage space of 440 litres.

Under the bonnet

The Toyota Corolla Cross is available with both conventional petrol and Hybrid Petrol-Electric powertrains.

Both engines are mated exclusively to Toyota’s latest generation CVT transmission, which aids efficiency while also offering the user the convenience that comes with an automatic transmission.

The 1.8-litre petrol engine offers 103kW at 6000rpm and 173Nm at 4400rpm. Tuned for refinement and mid-range torque delivery this engine is said to use just 6.8 litres per 100km.

The hybrid model is fitted with a 1.8-litre Atkinson cycle petrol engine. The petrol engine offers 72kW and 142Nm and is paired with a latest generation hybrid powertrain with a more compact, yet more efficient battery pack. The hybrid system adds 53kW and 163Nm when at full capacity.

Smooth, immediate acceleration response is made possible by the electric motor that provides an instant boost to aid acceleration.

When driven in the dedicated EV mode, full-electric propulsion allows for near-silent driving.

No charging is necessary, while driving the battery pack is recharged either via regenerative braking or by the petrol engine

The use of this innovative hybrid technology see Toyota claim that the Corolla Cross hybrid will use just 4.3-litres per 100km on the combined cycle.
