The Toyota Land Cruiser 300 has arrived in South Africa and represents the first new Land Cruiser in 14 years. Combining the core Land Cruiser attributes with a brand-new design and based on Toyota’s TNGA it represents a new age of Land Cruiser.

The design remains unmistakably angular but features a dramatically different profile compared its 200 predecessor. The newcomer also bears a resemblance to the much loved 80-series as it retains the classic two-box look.

Upfront is a large and prominent radiator grille flanked by rectangular headlamps on each side and U-shaped radiator openings The bonnet features a signature Land Cruiser channel down the centre.

The theme is followed through to the rear with large trapezoidal taillamps with stylised light guides, as well as large Land Cruiser and Toyota insignia.

The Land Cruiser 300 is brand new from the ground up and based on the new TNGA-F platform, retaining the ladder frame layout.

Under the bonnet

An all-new engine line up does duty under the bonnet. Buyers have a choice between a 3.5-litre V6 Twin Turbo petrol engine or 3.3-litre V6 turbodiesel.

These engines utilise a host of new technologies including a new dual-stage turbocharging system that contributes to increased power and a broad, flat torque curve.

The 3.3 V6 diesel offers 225kW at 4000rpm and 700Nm between 1600 and 2600rpm. This model is said to use 8.9 litres/100km.

The petrol powered V6 boasts 305kW at 5200rpm with a stout 650Nm from 2000rpm. This engine makes use of Toyota’s acclaimed D-4ST injection system that combines port and direct injection, a Dual VVT-i system and low inertia turbochargers to achieve ultra smooth power delivery. Toyota claim that this model uses 12.1 litres/100km.

Both engines are mated to a new slick-shifting ten-speed automatic transmission with low range and diff lock functionality.

New grades

The Land Cruiser 300 will be offered in three different grades, namely GX-R, ZX and GR-S.

GX-R remains the more utility focussed model and serves as the entry point into the range, while the ZX does duty as the luxury model.

Fittingle the ZX is fitted with 20-inch alloy wheels, chrome detailing and luxury-oriented interior trim.

The GR-Sport has been added to the line up as the off-road performance model and features bespoke exterior styling and trim, 18-inch alloy wheels and specification list that caters for off-road driving.

All models are fitted with LED headlamps featuring integrated DRLs, keyless entry, park distance control, climate control, Multi-Information Display, built-in Navigation, multiple power outlets, Crawl Control and Drive Mode Select.

In addition the ZX and GR-S feature powered third row seating, power operated back door with hands-free function, heated steering wheel with wood accents, JBL 14-speaker audio system with DVD playback and 12.3-inch screen, Multi-Terrain Monitor and Panoramic View, seat heating and ventilation, a wireless charger and tyre pressure monitoring. All models are equipped with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto functionality.

The ZX model gains a Wi-Fi enabled rear-seat entertainment system with wireless headphones, while the GR-S model features a high-tech E-KDSS system to maximise off-road capability as well as additional modes for the drive mode select system and a AWD Integrated Management system.

Off-road technologies

E-KDSS is an evolution of the acclaimed Kinetic Dynamic Suspension system that links all four wheels via hydraulically supported stabiliser bars, ensuring excellent wheel articulation when driving off-road and body-roll control when driving on-road.

All-wheel Drive Integrated Management combines the vehicles key dynamic modules to deliver enhanced performance across all terrains. The power steering, VSC, Brake Control as well as engine and transmission logic are all tailored to suit the conditions via the Multi-Terrain Select interface.

The Multi-Terrain Select system allows the driver to select from different modes including Deep Snow, Mud, Dirt and Sand. In Low-range mode, Rock, Mud and Sand are available alongside the new Auto mode, which enables the terrain logic and camera system to help predict the preferred driving mode.

The ZX and GR-S models are also equipped with a new 3D Multi Terrain Monitor which uses four surround cameras to display obstacles situated around the vehicle, including terrain conditions.

Safety and Security

A full suite of active safety systems includes Lane Trace Assist and all-speed radar cruise control, which work in conjunction with Blind Spot Monitoring, Lane Departure Alert, Rear Cross Traffic Alert and Adaptive High Beam.

Vehicle Stability Control, Active Traction Control and Hill Assist join Trailer Sway Control, Downhill Assist Control and the ABS, EBD and Brake Assist driver support systems.

Colour and Trim

The GX-R is available with the choice of two textile interior trims, Black or Neutral Beige. The ZX model offers buyers a choice of three luxurious leather interiors in black, black and red or a neutral beige. The GR-S is finished in GR-branded leather in either black or black and dark red.
