Following its launch in 2020, the Toyota Starlet became an instant success, cementing itself as a top seller in the highly competitive B–segment of South Africa’s passenger car market. This success can be attributed to the Starlets combination of stylish good looks, hatchback layout, comprehensive specification level and impressive fuel consumption figures.

Revised styling

The Starlet features revised front and rear styling that includes sleek headlamps up front, chrome detailing and a sloping rear roofline that incorporates a boot spoiler. Stylish two-piece rear light clusters complete the sporty yet elegant profile.

Inside story

The interior has been completely revised and now features swooping accent lines and blue detailing, with a large centrally mounted infotainment screen and easy to read instrumentation. A sporty, three-spoke steering wheel that incorporates steering wheel controls provides the perfect driver interface.

Under the bonnet

The Starlet is now fitted with a larger capacity 1.5-litre engine, the same as which can be found in the equally popular Urban Cruiser. This four-cylinder, naturally aspirated engine now offers increased performance totalling 77kW and 138Nm. Despite the increased performance, fuel consumption remains frugal with Toyota claiming it will use as little as 5,4 litres/100km.

Increased standard specification

In response to customer feedback the Starlet now incorporates high levels of the latest technology. All models are fitted with a touchscreen audio system, which measures either 18 or 23cm, and features USB, Bluetooth as well as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality. Also standard is automatic climate control, power retractable mirrors and electric windows. In addition Xr models feature smart entry, push start and cruise control amongst other niceties.

Drivers are assisted by equipment including rear parking sensors, Hill Start Control, Vehicle Stability Control, ABS and EBD. All models are fitted with driver and passenger airbags while the Xr models feature side and curtain airbags too.

Model line up

Toyota has retained the Xi, Xs and Xr specification grades and motorists can choose between a five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic transmission on Xs and Xr models.
