Toyota Rumion lands in Mzansi
Toyota Rumion to take over from the well-loved Avanza
The Toyota Avanza is immensely popular in South Africa where it fills the gap as a well priced yet reasonably sized people mover. Now after two generations the Avanza is being replaced by the Toyota Rumion, featuring a host of improvements, which should once again make it a hit in the smaller MPV segment.
Based on the Suzuki Ertiga, the Rumion represents the third product in the Toyota Suzuki alliance.
Despite a new name, the Rumion features the same product concept, compact dimensions, four-cylinder petrol engine, seven-seater layout and good ground clearance. A change to a front-wheel drive layout means improved fuel economy, better packaging and reduced mechanical complexity.
Upfront is a trapezoidal three-slat radiator grille and centrally mounted Toyota elipse. Alongside are large tapered headlamps with a large lower apron, home to stylised air vents and fog lamp surrounds.
The side profile is softened by a prominent crease line extending from the front fender to the rear tail lamps. Large vertical LED tail lamps with L-shaped lens extensions create a squared off look.
Under the bonnet
All Toyota Rumion models are fitted with a 1.5-litre normally aspirated engine that produces 77kW and 138Nm. This engine can be paired with either a five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic transmission. Toyota claims that despite the transmission choice, the Rumion will use just 6.2 litres/100km.
Model grades and specification
The Toyota Rumion retains the existing three grade line-up badged S, SX and TX. The S-grade model is aimed at customers looking for a people carrier at a low price point. Features include hardwearing black exterior mirrors and radiator grille, colour-coded bumpers and high-mounted brake light. The interior features durable textile trim and 60/40 folding second row seating. Ventilated cup holders, a 12-volt power outlet, electric windows, tilt adjustable steering column and air-conditioner are standard fitment.
The SX grade offers a balance between affordability and comfort. Additional features include colour-coded door handles and exterior mirrors, chrome treatment for the radiator grille and a rear-window wiper. Remote central locking, a rear-window demister, additional 12-volt power outlet, steering controls, park distance control and rear air-conditioner add to the convenience.
The TX grade is perfect for customers looking for enhanced comfort and convenience with a comprehensive spec level, aimed at the family buyer. Upgrades include keyless entry with push start, chrome door handles, fog lamps and automatic air conditioner. The audio system features a touchscreen interface, which includes a reverse camera, and Apple CarPlay or Android Auto functionality while the speaker count rises to six. A faux wood trim finish adds an air of luxury.
S-grade models are fitted with steel wheels shod with 15-inch tyres, SX variants use the same size but with hubcaps while the TX models are fitted with 15-inch alloy wheels. All grades feature driver and passenger airbags, ABS, EBD as well as Isofix anchor points.
