The Toyota Urban Cruiser, which was launched in South Africa in March this year has become an instant hit, selling over 900 units a month. This sales success can be attributed to its space, SUV-like styling, value for money and the vast Toyota dealer network.

At the launch the Xr grade was the big focus, but it is the mid-grade Xs model that offers a stellar value proposition and ensures that Toyota offers customers a wider choice than their natural rivals.

Balanced specification

The Xs variant offers customers a balanced level of specification, with core specification items at an attractive price point.

Standard specification includes keyless entry with push button start, electric windows all round, tilt-adjustable steering, power-adjustable mirrors, LED headlamps and LED daytime running lights. Exterior specification includes alloy wheels, roof rails, body-coloured door handles, power retractable mirrors and a rear window wiper with demister function.

Inside auto air-conditioning, a secondary glove compartment, rear armrest and 60:40 split backrest, Rear Park Distance Control and a reverse camera fulfil the comfort and convenience needs. A touchscreen infotainment system incorporates Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality.

Hey good looking

Rugged styling is emphasised with a raised stance, textured side and wheel arch mouldings and bumper guards. A large grille with two horizontal slats and centred Toyota badge are flanked by chrome strips. When viewed from the side a piano black C-pillar garnish creates the impression of a floating roof structure. A chunky rear features large rectangular taillights and an embossed tailgate garnish.

In Xs specification, the Urban Cruiser is fitted with 16-inch alloy wheels. A monotone colour scheme offers buyers a choice of six colours.

Inside story

A three-spoke steering wheel with metallic inserts and steering switches, frames the elliptical gauges and a centrally mounted Multi-Information Display and contribute to excellent overall ergonomics.

Black fabric seats feature a honeycomb pattern, which complement the rest of the interiors hard wearing black, with a textured finish.

Under the bonnet

Under the bonnet of the Urban Cruiser Xs model is the same 1.5-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine delivering 77kW and 138Nm. Toyota claim a fuel consumption figure of 6.2 litres per 100km for the combined cycle. The Urban Cruiser Xs is available with either a five-speed manual transmission or a four-speed automatic, driving the front wheels.

Safety and security is catered for courtesy of ABS, EBD, side protection beams, driver and passenger airbags and Isofix. An alarm and immobiliser is also included.
