The popular Volkswagen Crafter range has been updated with the addition of the Crafter 35 Automatic and 4Motion derivatives. With a payload of 3 – 5 tonnes, the Crafter is the largest van produced by Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles.

The Crafter offers a basis for personalisation, imported into South Africa as panel vans, 90 percent of all Crafters sold locally are converted into busses for passenger transport, ambulances and patient carriers, while the balance are bought by logistics and courier companies.

Enhanced ergonomics

An updated interior features well thought out ergonomics that also ensure higher levels of practicality and ease of use. Improvements include durable seat upholstery, a revised instrument cluster and control panel as well as plenty of storage. Interior comfort is improved thanks to a fresh air ventilator including air recirculation and heating, power steering, heat-insulating glass, electric front windows and door pockets.

Built to carry loads

With a loading capacity ranging from 9.3m3 to 17.5m3 the Crafter caters for most load carrying needs while also boasting the longest loading space in its class of up to 4.6m.

Dual rear wing doors and a 1.3m left-hand sliding door make loading of large objects a breeze. With a payload of up to 2.5 tonnes and an engine that boasts 340Nm of torque, the Crafter is also able to move big loads without breaking a sweat.

The Crafter is available in 3.5 and 5 tonne GVM versions and two wheelbases measuring 3 640mm or 4 490mm, three body lengths and two different roof configurations.

Safety of occupants and cargo

Safety of drivers and cargo, whether loads or passengers is of utmost importance and therefore a number of features have been added to the Crafter. ESP combined with Brake Assist and Crosswind Assist, Multi-Collision Braking, Traction Control and EBD are now all standard fitment.

A number of handy driver assistance and convenience systems are available as options including a High Roof, wider opening rear doors, dual sliding doors, Trendline Trim Exterior, LED headlights, Park Pilot, Park Distance Control, Trailer Assist, Park Assist and Tow bar to name a few.

The Automatic choice

The Crafter 35 Panel Van 2.0 TDI Automatic features the same world-class standard safety systems and convenience features but adds the convenience of an automatic transmission. The eight-speed automatic gearbox utilises a torque convertor to transform the Crafter into a vehicle that is easy to drive in traffic or over long distances. A robust design meets the requirements of a commercial vehicle while transmission ratios are adapted for optimum fuel consumption and performance

The Crafter 35 Panel Van 2.0 TDI Automatic features the a 100mm lower loading height compared to the 4Motion derivative as well as the largest loading height and payload in its class.

The ability to go anywhere

The Crafter 35 Panel Van 2.0 TDI 4Motion is based on the front-wheel drive model but adds a four-wheel drive coupling that delivers power to the rear axle, making it ideal for use in rough terrain or as the basis for a camping or adventure vehicle.

The six-speed manual gearbox fitted to this model has been further developed from the T6 gearbox to offer shifting comfort similar to that of passenger cars.

Under the bonnet

Both Crafter 35 derivatives are available with a 2.0 TDI engine, which boasts 103kW and 340Nm while returning a fuel consumption figure of 8.2 litres/100km in the Automatic and 9.1 litres/100km in the 4Motion.
