Audi South Africa has announced a partnership with GridCars, which will see them install ultra-fast charging stations across the country. This partnership will see Audi become the first electric vehicle brand to invest in this technology at publicly accessible sites, with these 150kW chargers being the first for the South African market. These charge points will provide up to 150kW of DC charge to electric vehicles, which means that an Audi e-tron 55, with a 95kWh battery can be charged from 10 to 90 percent in approximately 30 minutes.

As part of the charging infrastructure rollout Audi will invest in the installation of 70 new EV charge connectors at 33 sites, which will be accessible for all electric vehicle drivers, across South Africa.

Audi believes this strategy in preparation of the upcoming launch of their e-tron range will help assist all consumers with the adoption of electric mobility. Investing in the country’s charging infrastructure is critical and Audi is committed to playing an integral role in this transition to premium sustainable mobility.

The partnership with GridCars has led to the rollout of local charging infrastructure including:

  • Four 150kW ultra-fast DC charging stations enabling 340km in 30 minutes planned for placement on major highway routes such as the N1, N2, N3 and N4.
  • Five 80kW DC fast charging stations enabling 185km in 30 minutes, also on major highway routes including in Richmond, which closes a long-term gap between Johannesburg and Cape Town.
  • Twenty-four 22kW AC fast charging stations, enabling 100km in about an hour at public lifestyle and recreational locations across South Africa.
  • A total of 70 connectors will be available from the above charging stations, further growing the public charging opportunities for all EV drivers
