Toyota South Africa Motors recently hosted President Cyril Ramaphosa at its manufacturing plant in Durban. The President as well as a delegation of public officials, including the Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition Ebrahim Patel joined Toyota in celebrating the opening of the Corolla Cross production line.

The opening of this latest production line reaffirms Toyota’s investment and commitment to the South African economy and the local automotive sector. The growth over the last 60 years has been substantial and the plant now manufactures Hilux, Fortuner, Corolla Quest and Hi-ace as well as selected Hino and Dyna models in a SKD format.

The addition of the Corolla Cross manufacturing line has created 575 new jobs at the plant while another 1200 jobs were created within the component supplier base.

The project placed a big emphasis on local content, which resulted in the localisation of 621 parts with 56 local suppliers, 16 of which are black owned. Toyota South Africa also on boarded five new Tier-1 suppliers and 12 new Tier-2/3 suppliers. The total economic contribution with local suppliers is over R1.4 billion per annum.

What about the Corolla Cross?

The new Corolla Cross is based on the acclaimed Toyota New Global Architecture platform and as of August 2021, 32 Toyota and Lexus models are based on this platform, which accounts for 70% of global Toyota sales. The Corolla Cross will be manufactured in right- and left-hand drive configurations in Durban and exported to 40 countries in Africa.

The introduction of hybrid technology to the Corolla Cross line requires totally new assembly processes and vehicle testing systems and these now form part of Toyota’s standard operating systems at the Prospecton plant, located just outside Durban.

For Toyota customers hybrid technology represents a number of benefits including lower emissions and fuel consumption. The launch of SA’s first locally produced, volume Hybrid Electric Vehicle makes this technology much more accessible to the wider population.

The locally built Toyota Corolla Cross range will go on sale in South Africa at the beginning of November.
