Hino Team Sugawara has conducted extensive testing of the 794kW hybrid truck, which it has entered into the 2022 Dakar Rally. The team are happy with the performance and are feeling confident that they can claim victory in the monster trucks class using Hino’s first racing diesel-electric hybrid powertrain.

Hino’s racing truck is based on the bonneted 600-Series, which is only sold in the USA, however the underpinnings are based on the Hino 500-Series which is consistently a strong seller in South Africa.

In order to make the truck even more competitive it has been lightened and now features a completely new drivetrain. Under that long bonnet is 9-litre six-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine that develops 588kW (790bhp). The big difference compared to previous versions is the addition of a hybrid capacitor electric propulsion system that adds a further 206kW (276hp) resulting in a combined 794kW (1 065hp). Power is transferred to all four wheels via an instant shift racing six-speed automatic transmission with a Hi-Lo switch as well as a locking centre differential.

The team utilised an extensive testing programme to fine-tune the powertrain settings as well as the suspension settings, resulting in massive improvements in the trucks acceleration as well as overall performance.

Veteran Hino racing driver and Team director Teruhito Sugawara will have Hirokazu Sumemiya as his co-driver and Yugi Mochizuki as a travelling mechanic alongside him in the cabin.

The 2022 edition of the Dakar Rally has attracted one of the biggest truck fields in recent years, with 60 trucks from 12 manufacturers set to line up for the prologue. Once again Hino will be the only Japanese competitor in the truck category against competitors, which include entries from MAN, Iveco, DAF, KAMAZ, Tatra, Renault, Maz, Scania, Mercedes-Benz and Ford Cargo, amongst others.

The Dakar Rally, which is considered the world’s most gruelling motorsport event, will take place in Saudi Arabia between January the 2nd and the 14th.
