Honda launches all-new BR-V
Honda BR-V takes on an SUV form
Honda has launched the all-new second generation BR-V in South Africa. This new model offers significant improvements in terms of exterior design, standard features, technology and interior space.
The introduction of the second-generation model sees the BR-V morph from its traditional MPV look and styling and take on the form of an SUV. The range consists of three specification levels, one engine choice and manual or CVT transmissions.
The original BR-V was well loved for its combination of utility, space and comfort and this has been retained despite the shift to more SUV focussed styling. The body is 35mm longer and 45mm wider and this translates into improved interior space across all three rows.
A completely redesigned front end incorporates a new grille, LED headlights and daytime running lights and in doing so gives the BR-V a more rugged appearance. A dynamic body shape features strong contour lines running from front to rear where LED taillight clusters neatly blend in with the bodylines. Roof rails and alloy wheels measuring 16 or 17-inches in size round off the BR-Vs rugged new look.
Inside story
The interior features an uncluttered minimalist design that is finished off with quality materials and the fascia, which embodies Honda’s latest design philosophy. The redesign of the interior sees leather like materials being added to areas such as armrests, door panels and the dashboard to create a more upmarket feel.
A 4.2-inch TFT screen provides information on functions such as active Honda sensing functions, which on Elegance models are adjustable via controls on the tilt-adjustable steering wheel. The infotainment system has also been vastly improved and all models now feature a brand new seven-inch touch screen system with integrated Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. Comfort and Elegance models gain an integrated reverse parking camera.
Increases in exterior dimensions have translated into improved leg and shoulder room for second and third row passengers. The BR-V retains its seven-seater capability and does so without impacting on the luggage carrying ability. Both the second and third rows of seats can be folded flat for the carrying of bulkier items like bicycles or golf clubs.
Fabric seats are standard on all but the Elegance model, which features synthetic leather upholstery and additional trim finishes. All three rows feature power outlets and air conditioning.
Under the bonnet
The new BR-V is fitted with Honda’s latest 1.5-litre DOHC i-VTEC engine that offers 89kW at 6 600rpm and 145Nm at 4 300rpm. Trend models are only available with a six-speed manual gearbox, while Comfort derivatives can be had with either a six-speed manual or a CVT, which has been specifically tuned for the BR-V. Elegance models are available exclusively with the CVT transmission. Manual models are said to use 6.8 litres per 100km, while CVT models will use just 6.3 litres per 100km.
Improved safety
The BR-V has been designed with Honda’s Advanced Compatibility Engineering body structure technology at its core and is fitted with Honda’s premium suite of active safety features known as Honda Sensing. All BR-V models feature Vehicle Stability Assist, Hill Start Assist, Emergency Stop Signal, ABS and Isofix child seat anchors. Dual front and side airbags are standard across the range, while Comfort and Elegance models are fitted with curtain airbags too.
Top of the range Elegance models are fitted with an enhanced suite of Honda Sensing technologies which comprise equipment such as Collision Mitigation Braking, Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Keeping Assist, Road Departure Mitigation, Auto High-Beam, Lane Watch Camera and Forward Collision Warning.
