Toyota releases second batch of GR Yaris models
To meet demand Toyota have extended the production run of the GR Yaris
When it was launched in 2021, the Toyota GR Yaris took the motoring world by storm with its combination of performance, driver engagement and motorsport infused pedigree.
Following unexpected global demand and a very positive market response, Toyota Motor Corporation have heeded the call of buyers worldwide and extended the production run and availability of the GR Yaris and as such, South Africa will be receiving a second batch of this in demand hot hatch.
Single model
The local model line up has been reduced to a single model, based on the higher specification Rally variant. This model features additional equipment such as a Torsen limited-slip differential on both the front and rear axle, performance-tuned suspension, revised power-steering assistance and 18-inch BBS forged alloy wheels, fitted with Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tyres.
Inside the Rally model is also fitted with a combination of leather and Alcantara seats in the front with enhanced bolstering, leather rear seats, Heads-up Display, the Toyota Safety Sense active safety suite and Active Noise Control.
What comes standard?
Standard equipment incudes keyless entry with push start, LED headlamps with Daytime Running Lights and auto function, LED foglamps, heated and power-retractable exterior mirrors and rain sensing wipers. An auto-dimming rear-view mirror, dual-zone climate control, Multi Information Display, 12-volt power outlet and a tilt and telescopic adjustable steering column add to the convenience. A six-speaker touchscreen audio system is standard on all models and features Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality as well as Bluetooth and USB inputs
Inside story
The interior features a driver-oriented design with a twin hooded binnacle framing easy to read analogue instrumentation which features a 4.2-inch TFT colour multi-information display. The gearshift lever has been raised by 50mm to bring it closer to the steering wheel. The GR-Four selector is placed ahead of the gear shift, for easy changes between Normal, Sport and Track modes. A GR-branded, three-spoke steering wheel with red stitching, circular hub and conveniently placed steering wheel switches maximise driving pleasure.
Under the bonnet
Under the bonnet is a three-cylinder turbocharged unit that benefits from motorsport technologies to maximise performance. The 1.6-litre powerplant offers 198kW at 6500rpm and 360Nm between 3000 and 4600rpm. The engine is mated to a six-speed manual transmission, which is engineered to handle the high torque levels.
Performance is delivered to the road by a new GR Four all-wheel-drive system designed to optimise power delivery while being simple and lightweight and the distribution of torque between the front and rear axles is governed by a high-response coupling. Performance braking is taken care of by 356mm grooved discs clamping four-pot callipers, designed to handle the rigours of performance driving.
