The Volkswagen Motorsport team kicked off their 2022 racing season at Killarney Raceway in Cape Town earlier this month.

This year will see the Volkswagen Motorsport team compete in the popular CompCare Polo Cup, SupaCup as well as the Global Touring Car Series.

Started in 2016, the GTC series has grown into one of South Africa’s premiere racing competitions and this year will see four brands battle it out across seven races.

Fresh GTC driver line up

In the GTC series, Volkswagen Motorsport will be represented by drivers Jonathan Mogotsi and Daniel Rowe. Rowe has been Volkswagen’s winningest driver in the GTC series, since joining the team six years ago. Jonathan Mogotsi, who will be piloting the second car, has come full circle with the Volkswagen Motorsport team.

Six years ago, he won the Driver Search competition, which secured him a place in the Volkswagen team for the Polo Cup championship. With only a background in gaming, Mogotsi has continued to impress with his racing talent and last year he was the runner in the very competitive SupaCup series.

Volkswagen is passionate about unearthing talented drivers who would otherwise not have had the opportunity to compete in motorsport. A partnership with the Squadra Corse gives them a pipeline to unearth and nurture new racing talent.

One make series ideal for driver development

2022 marks the 26th season of the popular Polo Cup racing series. This series sees competitors race it out in identical machinery and this makes it a great stepping-stone for youngsters looking to get into the sport.

From 2022 the Polo Cup racecar, which is based on the Polo GTI, will incorporate the updates implemented to the new Polo including new headlights, grille, front bumper, tailgate, rear bumper and taillights.

A faster more advanced Polo racing car

The SupaPolo series consists of heavily modified racing cars that are also all identical. These bespoke racing models are fitted with aero packages, sequential X-Track gearboxes and 2.0-litre turbocharged engines akin to that found in the powerful Golf R.
