Attractive and impressively spacious budget buy.

Buyers looking for an affordable family hatchback can be rest assured that the Renault Sandero Stepway offers unrivaled space and value for money in it’s class. With an increased ride height of 40mm compared to the normal Sandero version the Stepway also adds practicality to an already versatile package.

Background and condition of vehicle:

  • This particular Renault Sandero was well cared for and was therefore still in a very tidy condition.
  • Besides one very tiny scratch mark on the left door the exterior seemed in a perfect condition.
  • Inside the cabin we could not notice any flaws.
  • I found the grey cloth upholstery not only attractive to look at, but also quite practical in hiding dust and grime.
  • The 205/55R16 tyres fitted to the rear of our test vehicle was just about still new, while the front tyres also had a fair amount of life left in them still.

Performance and Economy:

  • Under the bonnet you will find a 900cc 3-cylinder turbocharged engine that Renaults utilizes in quite a few of its models.
  • The engine is good for 66 Kilowatts of power and 135Nm of torque.
  • Considering the vehicle’s price, outright performance is certainly not bad at all compared to other offerings at this price point.
  • You will notice a tiny amount of turbo lag when pulling away from rest, but thereafter the Stepway pulls nicely through the entire rev-range.
  • This Stepway will reach a 100km/h from rest in 11.1-seconds.
  • One of the best qualities of the little engine is its fantastic fuel economy and with some careful driving figures as low as 5.4-litres per 100km is achievable.

How does it drive?

  • Due to its increased ride height you will notice that the Stepway is certainly more comfortable than the standard Sandero model.
  • Rougher roads and more importantly, speed humps posed no problems for this Renault.
  • Clutch and gear change actions also proved light that made city driving more enjoyable.
  • The power steering is also on the light side which proved perfect for slow city driving and negotiating those tight parking spaces.
  • On the safety front the Stepway comes equipped with anti-lock brakes, as well as dual-airbags.

Inside the vehicle:

  • The Sandero Stepway interior design proved quite basic with no fancy thrills, but rather lots of hard plastics.
  • This said it is expected at the price, while on the upside the materials did seem durable and for the most part the interior still appears reasonably stylish.
  • The Stepway’s basic interior design keeps buttons to a minimum and the switches that are there are logically laid out and proved practical to use.
  • You also get a fair amount of standard kit that included the following:
  • Air-conditioning - Dual airbags
  • Power Steering - Blue tooth phone connectivity
  • Central Locking - ABS braking with EBD
  • Electric windows (Front) - USB port
  • Radio/CD-player - Various cupholders
  • Multi-function steering wheel (Stalk behind wheel)

Space and Practicality:

  • Although the Sandero Stepway is regarded as a compact city car, it is surprisingly spacious inside.
  • Especially in the rear you will find plenty of head and legroom, equivalent to a small family car.
  • Loading space proved decent too, with 292-litres on offer. The rear seats can also be folded down flat if more loading space is required.

Summary:

  • The Stepway scores well with its fashionable exterior design, raised ride height practicality and spacious interior.
  • Low running cost is also ensured by the highly fuel efficient 900cc Turbo power unit, while Renault’s fantastic 5-year/150 000km warranty should further create peace of mind amongst buyers.
  • This particular used Renault Sandero Stepway priced at R 145 800 certainly offers great value for money.
  • Good value
  • Comfortable and spacious at the price
  • Raised ride heigh adds practicality
