Ranger a great all-rounder at the price!

 

If you are looking for the most value possible from your 4x2 bakkie buy, the Ford Ranger 2.2 XL is one of the best buys at the moment. The Ranger XL is extremely well priced and offers a very decent list of standard kit, while the 2.2-litre Turbo Diesel power unit offers surprisingly good performance and economy at the price too.

 

Background and condition of vehicle:

• Our Ranger on test this week certainly impressed with its overall pristine condition.
• The bodywork, as well as the interior was virtually still perfect and to be honest after 33 532km it still appeared like new.
• Even the rubberized load area seemed like it has never even been used before.
• Although not fitted with new tyres, the 265/65R17 Good-Year Wrangler boots still displayed loads of tread.
• This Ranger came equipped with attractive optionally fitted black 17-inch wheels.  

 

Performance and Economy:             

• Our Ranger in XL-form comes fitted with a 2.2-litre Turbo Diesel power unit that pushes out a respectable 118kW of power and 385Nm of torque.
• Although outgunned in terms of performance by it’s more expensive and powerful stablemates, you would be surprised that this Ranger offers pace and acceleration that is much closer to these models than you would have expected.
• In town the Ranger XL picks up speed with ease with truly little turbo lag evident, while it also cruises quite effortlessly on the open road.
• The smooth shifting 6-speed gearbox not only proved to be well refined at the price, but also offered well-spaced ratio’s that worked well with the characteristics of the 2.2-litre engine.
• Ford also quotes impressive fuel economy figures of just 6.5-litres per 100km.

 

How does it drive?

• At the price I feel the Ranger XL performs admirably and to be honest there isn’t much difference in ride quality compared to some of it’s more expensive stablemates.
• For a vehicle of this nature the ride quality proved more than comfortable on most road surfaces, although you do notice the firmer ride on rougher roads.
• For a commercial vehicle at the price the Ranger offers impressive levels of comfort.

 

Inside the vehicle:

• Inside the cabin you immediately notice that the materials are of good quality and should prove to be durable in the long run, as you would expect from a commercial vehicle of this nature.
• Although one of the entry-level models in the Ranger double-cab range, in XL-form you still get lots of standard kit that even included an infotainment system, al be it with a small screen.
• The cloth upholstery also proved attractive.

• Like most double-cab bakkies these days, the Ranger can easily accommodate 5 adults in relative comfort.
• The cabin also offers plenty of storage spaces that included deep door pockets and several cupholders throughout the cabin.
• The Ranger is an excellent tow vehicle, with the Ranger XL capable of pulling a braked trailer of up to 3 500kg.
• It’s payload of 1 024Kg also compares very favorably with other double-cab competitors.

 

Summary:

• In XL-guise the Ford Ranger is all-round most certainly a very capable vehicle and therefore offers immense value at the price, especially low mileage models like our Ranger on test.
