Close to new T-Cross at a saving!

Marketed as a compact crossover the Volkswagen T-Cross will most certainly appeal to buyers that need a little more space and practicality than what a Polo can offer. The T-Cross’s attractive design and modern features makes it a real hot seller in this sector of the market. Our test model was just about new and thus offers prospective buyers a small saving compared to new.

Background and condition of vehicle:

  • With a little more than 7 700km on the clock it is no surprise that the vehicle appears and drives like new.
  • No flaws whatsoever were noticed.
  • Our test vehicle was fitted with 205/55R17 tyres.

Performance and Economy:

  • Under the hood you will find a small 1-litre 3-cylinder petrol engine.
  • But do not be fooled by its size as the small unit packs a decent punch. Maximum power is rated at an impressive 85 Kilowatts, accompanied by a healthy 200Nm of torque.
  • Coupled to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission the T-Cross is surprisingly nippy, especially in and around town.
  • Our test model needs just over 10-seconds to reach a 100km/h, while a top speed of around a 190km/h is not too shabby either.
  • But its the engine’s all-round capabilities that impressed the most.
  • The T-Cross is easy and effortless to drive due to the excellent tractability of the engine aided by the seven ratios on offer.
  • Fuel consumption also proved impressive with a combined quoted figure of just 5.3-litres per 100km.

How does it drive?

  • The T-Cross felt quite softly sprung and therefore does not quite feel as agile as a Polo.
  • That is a price most owners will happily pay in return for a quiet and absorbent low speed ride.
  • Despite its slightly softer ride the chassis still responds well to driver inputs and delivers secure and safe overall handling.
  • The DSG transmission impressed with its quick responding characteristics, while providing silky smooth shifts at the same time.

Inside the vehicle:

  • The T-Cross has the measured, grown-up aura we expect of a Volkswagen, fine space and versatility and just enough visual distinctiveness to catch the eye.
  • The cabin is certainly visually appealing and although relatively plain it still looks modern and fresh.
  • I especially found the digital instrumentation attractive.
  • Build quality, as well as the quality of materials inside the cabin proved to be top-class at the price.
  • There are plenty modern features and equipment too, that included the following:
  • Air-conditioning  - Cruise control
  • Central Locking - Rain sensor
  • Auto headlights - Bluetooth phone connectivity
  • Infotainment system with screen - USB connection
  • On-Board trip computer - Front and side airbags (6)
  • Cupholders - Isofix rear seats
  • ABS braking with EBD - Stop/Start
  • Traction and stability control - Day time driving lights
  • Multi-function steering wheel - PDC with rear park camera
  • Electric windows - 12V socket
  • Voice command

Space and Practicality:

  • The driver seat offers plenty of adjustment, which is comfortable and a good size, while there is more than enough head and legroom in the front as well as the rear of the vehicle.
  • There is 377-litres of boot space that could be increased to 1 281-litres with the rear seats folded flat.

Summary:

  • The T-Cross is most certainly among the most accomplished compact crossovers in its class.
  • Overall refinement is good, while the interior is not only modern and attractive, but versatile too.
  • But the star of the show is the little 1-litre engine that delivers a fun yet comfortable driving experience, with good all-round performance and frugal fuel economy.
  • Good performance
  • Frugal fuel economy
  • Modern design

X  Quite expensive compared to some of its rivals
